Selma High School didn’t win their jamboree game against Jeff Davis High School, but the experience was a joyous one for the Saints. Winning wasn’t even important to Saints’ head coach Leroy Miles, but the games capped off a fun end to what he thought was a great spring.

“We had a couple of turnovers (against Jeff Davis). We had the snap over the center’s head and a fumble where they picked the ball up and scored,” said Miles. “It kind of deflated us a little bit and then we started to get some of our young kids in.”

The 30-0 loss, with many of the points coming from the younger Saints in the game, was the last thing Miles was looking for.

“It doesn’t really matter if we win,” Miles said. “The purpose of the jamboree is for us to evaluate some guys, so it’s all good. It’s always good to have a spring game and people see them in the spring getting ready for the next year. It really will help to the success next fall.”

The two-halves system, with Selma taking a break before playing Linden High School, gave the Saint’s a little trouble.

“You can’t win a game in a half,” Miles said. “We are used to having to play four quarters in a football game. We’re looking at the positive, we played the first quarter strong. Especially on defense, we just turned the ball over on offense. We have time to fix that.”
