Keith got a taste of déj vu by salvaging third place in the Selma Holiday Invitational with a 56-37 win over Southside on Tuesday.
Only six days earlier, the Bears beat the Panthers to take the Keith Holiday Tournament.
“Anytime you get a win, it’s big,” said Keith coach Tommy Tisdale. “We responded well from (Monday’s) loss (to Wilcox Central). We did a better job of playing the whole game.”
Both teams started sluggishly, with the Bears holding a 9-7 edge after a quarter.
But the Panthers’ offensive struggles continued in the second quarter, and the Bears heated up. Keith opened the period with an 8-1 run highlighted by a Rodney Ellis 3-pointer and Terrance Collins 3-point play. A 12-4 run to extended the lead to 29-16 at the half.
The Bears stretched the lead to 41-21 with a 12-4 third quarter run sparked by a stronger inside game and Southside turnovers.
“We beat ourselves,” said Southside coach Cedric Brown. “We don’t have any leadership.”
The Bears sealed the win with an 11-2 fourth quarter run triggered by two Terry Jones Jr. layups.
Collins led the Bears with 15 points. Jones added 12 points and Ellis finished with 10.
Demarcus Smith led the Panthers with seven points.
