A loud crash and the sound of shattering glass hitting the floor interrupted what would normally be the beginning of a long weekend at Dallas Avenue Pharmacy.

Just before 4 p.m. Friday, a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo crashed into the pharmacy, doing damage to the entrance area and some of the interior of the store, but no customers were injured according to owner Tim Gibbs.

“There were a few customers in the store at the time, but no one was hurt,” Gibbs said. “One customer had just walked out, but there was no one standing at the front (of the store).”

According to the Jeep’s driver Cathy Rush, the brakes on her car went out as she was pulling into the parking lot of the pharmacy.

“I had both feet, pressing down on the brakes,” Rush said. “I’m just glad no one was injured. I couldn’t live with myself if that happened. I already can’t live with myself.”

Rush said she was out running errands, preparing for a beach trip for the holiday weekend.

She had stopped at the grocery store first before continuing on to Dallas Avenue to have a prescription filled before the incident occurred.

“I know things happen,” Rush said. “But normally its because people have done something. I’m just a normal, sane person.”

The incident smashed open the front door, as well as another outside window and a display case inside of the store.

Gibbs said the store would have to board up the front of the store and reset the alarm system in order to keep the inside of the store safe.

The pharmacy will, however, continue to do business with no interruption.

“The good thing is, we have a drive thru,” Gibbs said. “So people can still drive through to get their prescriptions filled.”
