Orrville sirens up and running

When outdoor warning siren testing is conducted June 7 at 10 a.m. across Dallas County, Orrville will be back on the rotation.
The sirens had been down for several weeks, but Dallas County Emergency Management director Rhonda Abbott said the warning system is up and running.
“The siren located in Orrville has been repaired at a cost of $9,438,” she said. “The siren sustained substantial damage due to rodents getting into the siren cabinet and eating the wiring harness to the siren.”
The Orrville siren, Abbott said, is just one example of how a minor incident can have a major impact on an area.
Because sirens can fall victim to the elements and other unforeseen incidents, Abbott said it is important for residents of rural areas to have a backup plan when severe weather approaches.
“The EMA really encourages citizens to not be totally dependent on sirens as the only way to receive severe weather warnings,” she said. “Sirens fail. Sirens are intended for persons outdoors to hear and are not designated for indoor warnings. Everyone should have a NOAA weather radio, with battery backup to alert them of inclement weather conditions.”
Abbot reminded Dallas County residents the public is not expected to take any action in conjunction with the testing.
The tests will continue the first Tuesday of every month between 10 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. unless severe weather threatens the area.
Those who do not hear their respected siren are asked to call the Dallas County EMA at 874-2515.
