Residents of Alabama can now save some green while going green.

Monday marked the start of the ENERGY STAR Appliance Rebate Program.

The $296 million government rebate program began in Monday in Alabama with $4,473,000.

“We had to start Monday at 6:00 a.m.,” said Jacque Kelly, manager of Sears in Selma. “The program only had so much money and people wanted to make sure they got their rebate before it ran out.”

The program allows up to $150 dollars back on the purchase of ENERGY STAR washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers and room air conditioners.

According to Kelly, those who plan on buying one of the approved appliances can go to alrebates.com to apply.

To go along with the rebate, some store also had sales to promote the rebate.

“Right now through Saturday we are running 30 percent off all ENERGY STAR appliances,” said Kelly.

So far, many in Alabama have been taking advantage of the rebates offered.

“The first day they had used 37 percent of the allotted money for Alabama,” said Kelly.

According to alrebates.com, as of now 45 percent of Alabama’s rebate funds have been used in just the first two days.

Though some states require proper disposal of old appliances to qualify for the rebate, Alabama does not, but according to Kelly, Sears will dispose of old appliances when it delivers the new appliance.

The rebate will end when all of the funds are exhausted.
