SELMA — When the AISA state track meet kicks off Thursday at Memorial Stadium, Morgan Academy will have some athletes gunning for the state title.

Senators coach Rob Robinson said he expects good things from Rachel Gomes and Katie DeWitt.

“Rachel Gomes has been the best hurdler in the state, so I’m hoping she doesn’t mess up,” Robinson said.

DeWitt is the defending champion in the discus throw and Sarah Fisher is expected to perform well in the sprint races and triple jump.

“She and Rachel are in five events,” Robinson said. “We try to get them in as many events as we can.”

Twenty teams from around the state will take part in the meet. Preliminaries start at noon Wednesday and finals start at noon Thursday. The field events will start first followed by the track events.

“We’re looking to have a good meet,” Robinson said. “The boys are limited because we just don’t have the numbers. We don’t have enough to compete for the championship but we can come close.”

Austin Smitherman will lead the boys in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash as well as the relays.

“Lee Scott (Academy in Auburn) is the team to beat on the girls side,” Robinson said. “We would like to win it, but we’ll have to wait and see what unfolds. For the boys, it’s pretty wide open. We’re close enough that we can mess things up for some other people. All it takes is one person to get sick or pull a muscle. You never know what’s going to happen in a track meet.”
