Meadowview Christian’s man of many hats, Rick Jackson, will not man Trojans’ sidelines in 2009.

He has chosen to vacate his position as the school’s football coach, baseball coach and athletic director effective at the conclusion of his 2008-09 contract.

“It wasn’t an easy decision for me,” said Jackson. “I’ve got two boys I want to see enjoy the rest of their career.”

Jackson said difficulties of the last year spurred his decision to vacate a position he has held for seven years. He said rumors and the circulation of petitions from a small number of Meadowview supporters — in addition to his children’s happiness — were his primary reasons for leaving Meadowview.

Following an AISA Class AA state title game appearance in 2007, The Trojans began the 2008 season 2-0. But according to Jackson, subsequent losses to Monroe and Clarke Prep led to a handful of people drawing up a petition for his dismissal.

Jackson said he and Meadowview headmaster Mike Gaylor also received typed, unsigned letters regarding Jackson and his son, Stone. At season’s end, another petition demanding his termination was circulated.

Jackson thought about his next move over Thanksgiving, and decided to move on.

“I didn’t want Meadowview or the athletic program to suffer in any way because of me,” said Jackson. “The well’s not dry by no means. The state of the program is in good shape and good hands.”

Jackson will coach the baseball team in the spring, but is uncertain of his next next move.

According to Gaylor, the school has a couple of prospects on its radar, but nothing definite.

“We’ll move forward and try to find the best coach and teacher we can find,” said Gaylor.
