Marina deadline passes, plans moving forward

Selma Mayor George Evans and the recreation committee are ready to take the next step toward building a new marina.

With the passing of the May 31 deadline for proposals, the city can now proceed to the next step.

People were asked to submit their ideas for the new marina to the Mayor’s office by 4:30 p.m. outlining their ideas for the bond issue that is earmarked for the project.

Selma Park and Recreation director Elton Reece said they can now begin discussing the submitted proposals.

“We wound up with two hand-delivered proposals and now the Mayor and recreation committee will start meeting on that next week,” he said. “They’ll call some of the people in and start discussing their plans. The ball is rolling.”

The bond issue for the project is $100,000, and Reese said there could be other funds available if money is left over from the Bloch Park and Memorial Stadium projects.

The proposals, Evans said, are just preliminary plans and not concrete blueprints.

“These are not bids, just proposals,” he said. “Now we’ll meet with everyone and come up with a plan that is good for the city and the individual.”

How the plans are used, Evans said, will also depend on what the groups can bring to the table financially.

There is no timetable on when the project will be completed; however, Evans said he hoped something could be done before this time next year.
