I’ve bitten my tongue on this for as long as I can, but to borrow a line from Popeye, “That’s all I can stansk, and I can stansk no more.”

What am I ranting and raving about? I’ll tell you.

I’m petitioning college football to return to the format set out by the rarely seen 11th commandment: “Thou shalt have no college football on any day that is not a Thursday or Saturday, and Thursday is stretching it.”

Look, don’t get me wrong. I love college football as much as anyone else. And when football season ends, I will happily watch the Arena League variety until fall rolls around again. But even I don’t need a game almost every single night of the week.

And most of the matchups are games that absolutely reek of teams and conferences so desperate for exposure that they will sell their souls to ESPN for the opportunity to take over a time slot nobody else wants.

A quick look at TV Guide’s Web site tells me that if I want to see college football tonight, I can flip to ESPN 2 at 9:30 p.m. to catch Fresno State and San Jose State.

And aside from one of my old journalism professors moving to San Jose State, the game isn’t as important to me as the high school playoffs going on throughout the state tonight.

You want an alternative to the Chargers and Colts on Sunday? Don’t worry. Connecticut pays a visit to South Florida. Though the Big East has regained some of its respect after Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College bolted for the ACC, moving a game to a Sunday time slot conjures jeers of the conferences old nickname, “Big Least.”

Monday Night Football not your thing? Too bad. With ESPN showing the game, the conglomerate doesn’t offer a college option.

But you can recover on Tuesday when Navy and Northern Illinois square off at 7 p.m.

For some it may be football nirvana. But for me, I believe that it is possible to get too much of a good thing. And the cavalcade of games hurled my way during the week kind of puts me off the good matchups Saturday offers.

So, for the love of all that is holy about Saturdays in the fall, let’s keep the games on the two days that people actually remember there’s a football game on the tube.
