For the second year, ArtsRevive challenged photographers to view Selma in a different light.

Winners were recently announced for a photo contest the group sponsored called “Through My Eyes … Selma’s Historic Architecture.”

The winning entries in both the children and adult categories will be on display at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library and Larry Striplin Performing Arts Center at a date to be named later.

“The reason that we did the contest is we wanted to get people in Selma looking at Selma in a different light,” said Ann Thomas, contest coordinator. “We wanted them to start taking notice of the beautiful waterfront that we have and the beautiful buildings that we have.”

Almost 40 entries were submitted this year, and Thomas said ArtsRevive was impressed with the talent displayed by the artists.

Photos featured architecture, but could also include the surrounding landscape. They could not be digitally enhanced and had to focus on the beauty of the area.

Last year’s contest focused more on the Alabama River and subjects related to it. Thomas said the organization hopes to conduct the contest every year in conjunction with Riverfront Market Day.

Two photographers judged this year’s contest, one a professional and the other a former winner in an ArtsRevive contest.

Winners in the children’s category were as follows: First place, Elizabeth Wilson (Cathedral Academy); second place, Holly Peyton Jones (Martin Middle School).

Winners in the adult category: First place, Kathy Price; second place, Sandy Greene, third place, Francesca Emerson.

First-place winners received $100, second-place winners got $50 and third-place winners got an ArtsRevive apron.

“Hopefully, we’ll have more people see it and hear more about it, and more and more people will contribute,” Thomas said.
