It’s official. Ward 4 Councilwoman Geraldine Allen is the newly elected president of the Selma City Council.
On Tuesday, the Selma City Council reviewed 11 provisional ballots before making the decision. A provisional ballot is a paper ballot used to vote by a voter where there is some problem in establishing a voter’s right to vote in that district.
Allen received two of the votes cast provisionally, which raised her run-off total to 2,247. Selma businessman Gene Hisel received nine of the votes from provisional ballots, raising his run-off total to 2,002.
Hisel has said he will not contest the election.
None of the votes affected the run-off race in Ward 4. Angela Benjamin won that election over Kelvin Williams, 345 to 217 votes.
The city council’s certification of the vote finalizes the election, said Jimmy Nunn, the city’s attorney.
