Judson College professor of art Ted Whisenhunt is displaying “Alabama Vernacular” at Samford University this month.

Whisenhunt said the folklore and eccentricities of the Black Belt region was his inspiration for the exhibit.

“I collected images and ideas that were once commonplace and incorporated them into my work,” he said. “Painted tree trunks, grave markers, shotgun houses, bottle trees and all things ‘haint blue’ are just a few reminders of a collaboration of cultures that settled this area of the state. I want to remind or introduce viewers to some of these practices that are continuing and some that are disappearing. This work celebrates the unique voice of rural Alabama.”

Whisenhunt’s work will be displayed at the Durbin Gallery at Birmingham-Southern College in October and at the Artists Gallery at the Alabama State Council on the Arts in Montgomery in November.
