Golfers will converge on Valley Grande Golf Course to take part in the first TEAM Mentoring Charity Golf Tournament on Sept. 26.

The tournament is open to all ages, and is intended to raise funds for the Selma TEAM mentoring program — an outreach program for children between the ages of 10 and 17.

“We really hope it’s going to be a fun event for everyone involved,” said Matt Wynalda, TEAM program director.

TEAM is in its first year, and proceeds will be used for its future budget.

The program is in the first of a five-year grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. ADECA provides the program’s entire funding for its first year of operation, but will reduce its funding by 20 percent annually over the next four years as TEAM becomes more self-sufficient.

“It’s been great for me and to give back to the youth in the Selma community,” said Sherrick Smith, a program volunteer. “I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

The tournament follows a four-person scramble, best-ball format. The cost is $60 per person or $220 per team of four.

The field will be capped at 80 teams. Golfers are encouraged to register in advance, but walk-ups will be accepted.

“We are still looking for more teams and players,” said Wynalda.

The top three teams will receive prize packages.

The TEAM golf tournament will not be the days’ only attraction though. Each par-3 hole will carry a hole-in-one challenge. Those successful in achieving the rare feat will win their choice of a 2008 Focus or Ranger from Moore-Stewart Ford, a men’s or women’s watch or cruise, depending on the hole.

The long drive competition will award a two-night, three-day getaway to one of 11 resorts in Nevada or Mississippi, and the closest-to-the-pin competition awards a one-night stay for two and breakfast at the St. James Hotel.
