It all looked the way it was supposed to for Morgan Academy on Friday night, and nobody on the field was sharper than running back Heath Harrelson.

He racked up yards and touchdowns every kind of way — bruising, dodging and outrunning defenders — on his way to a career night and a 41-7 win against Kingwood in the Senators’ home opener.

Harrelson ran for 205 yards and three touchdowns, collecting 118 and one score in the first half. He also returned a 98-yard kickoff for a touchdown in the third quarter that put the game away for Morgan.

“Our line blocked really well the second half,” Harrelson said. “First half they did well, but the second half they really pulled through. I didn’t even know I had 118 yards the first half.”

Kingwood (0-2) hurt itself with eight penalties that took away 55 yards, and a lot more in the point swing.

A holding call wiped out a 66-yard touchdown run on a quarterback draw by Andrew Steele. The score would have cut Morgan’s lead to 14-7 with less than four minutes left to play in the first half.

Instead, the Lions went down by two touchdowns at halftime and watched the Senators (1-1) score another unanswered touchdown to start the third.

Although Kingwood coach Jerry Stearns wasn’t happy with the result, he was glad his team didn’t let the game get a lot worse. At best, it wasn’t a repeat of last week’s 41-point loss to Hooper.

“We played much better football tonight than we did last week,” Stearns said. “It didn’t look that way on the scoreboard, but I’m proud of the progress we’ve made in a week. We only had three starters back this year. We’re rebuilding, plus we moved from Class AA up to Class AAA, and it might be tough for us.”

Kingwood finally struck with 5:44 to play in the third when Steele connected with receiver Justus Davis on a 59-yard touchdown, making it a 29-7 game.

Other than that, it was all Morgan.

In addition to Harrelson’s 5-yard score late in the second, running back Ryan Traylor toted a ball 16 yards to the house just seconds into the quarter.

Harrelson added a 29-yard touchdown on Morgan’s opening drive of the second half, and a 3-yard scoring run with 1:52 left in the third quarter.

Backup running back McCain Levins scored on an 8-yard run with 3:33 left in the game.

“When we can run between the tackles like we did tonight, then we can run options, we can get outside, we can throw the ball any time we want to,” Morgan coach Robert Gartman said. “That’s one thing we couldn’t do last week was run between the tackles.”
