City officials are calling candidates and members of the Selma City Council to gather at 2 p.m. in City Hall to view opening of sealed ballot boxes.

About 35 provisional ballots from Selma’s municipal elections Tuesday wound up in sealed provisional ballot boxes instead of the hands of City Clerk Lois Williams, as prescribed by law, according to Jimmy Nunn, the city’s attorney.

Williams was to deliver all the provisional ballots to the registrar’s office at the Dallas County Courthouse by Wednesday, but could not because 13 to 14 of the envelopes were sealed in the provisional ballot boxes.

Nunn called the offices of the Alabama secretary of state and the attorney general to receive advice. “They advised we would have to get a court order,” Nunn said. “So we have obtained a court order to proceed with opening up the boxes to get out of there the envelope that goes to the board of registrar’s office.”
