Alumni have plans for Lynn

Reunions are all about reflecting, reminiscing and sharing good food and memories. For Concordia College Selma’s Alumni Association this weekend, that’s exactly what they intend to do.
The 31st annual reunion, scheduled to begin June 24 at 6 p.m. and run through June 26, will include a picnic, banquet and worship service on the school’s west campus.
Alumni director Minnie McMillan said reunions of this type are important to the school.
“It’s a time for us to come and try to take a look at the needs of the school, give financial contributions and recruit students,” McMillan said. “We have just as many friends as we do alumni who give generously to the school, and we just want to help the school in any way we can.”
The group also plans to rededicate one of the school’s oldest buildings, Lynn Hall, during the three-day event. Built in 1925, it once housed administrative offices, dorms and classrooms.
“Lynn Hall is near and dear to the hearts of our alumni,” said alumni and development associate the Rev. McNair Ramsey. “Many of us spent lots of time in it, and we are looking forward to rededicating it for future generations.”
In mid-April, nearly 40 students, faculty and volunteers from Wisconsin donated their time and efforts to help restore the building. McMillan said Lynn remains one of the school’s landmarks.
“We’ve totally renovated the school, inside and out,” McMillan said. “Most of the faculty, 90-95 percent, have used it at some point or another.
“We want to eventually move it to our west campus, facing Broad Street, and use it as a focal point and drawing tool.”
Lynn was once the residence of Concordia’s founder Dr. Rosa J. Young, and has been part of the campus since the school was originally known as the Alabama Lutheran Academy and Junior College. Its name was officially changed to Concordia College in 1981.
McMillan said the reunions have also been popular with the school’s much older alumni.
“Twenty to 30 percent of our senior alumni come back year after year,” McMillan said. “Many even choose to stay in the housing. They’re really excited about our purchasing the school and expanding it.”
All alumni are welcome and encouraged to attend the event.
Registration forms are available through the college’s website at www.concordiaselma.edu. The final day to register is Friday by 6 p.m. Fees include $5 for the picnic and $30 for the banquet scheduled for June 25. Housing is $10 per night. Annual dues of $30 help keep the alumni connected.
