A Selma police detective worked through a labyrinth of leads that resulted in the arrest Tuesday of a local man for theft.
It took nearly a month, but the Selma Police Department believes it has its man. Officers arrested Michael Renard Craig, 32, of Selma on Tuesday.
“Craig is accused of stealing $6,000,” Sgt. Doug Stewart said. “Det. Jeffrey Hardy questioned the suspect, and he confessed to stealing the money.”
Stewart didn’t want to give too much information about the crime, saying only that Craig allegedly took cash from another individual, who reported the incident to authorities July 29.
That’s when Hardy started working on the case.
“Det. Hardy followed up on leads, and that led him to Craig,” Stewart said.
Officers placed Craig in the Dallas County Jail under a $30,000 bond.
Alabama law defines the crime of theft of property as when a person “knowingly obtains or exerts unauthorized control over the property of another, with intent to deprive the owner of his or her property.”
A first-degree offense occurs when the stolen property is more than $2,500 or theft of any vehicle, regardless of value.
The Code of Alabama deems theft of property first degree as a class-b felony.
Conviction of a class-b felony ensures a prison sentence from two to 20 years and a fine of up to $30,000.
