Judson excited about soccer season

Even though Judson College finished its spring term last Saturday, the school’s soccer coach hasn’t let that keep him from working hard for next season.
Apart from the excitement of bringing in 10 new recruits next season, the Eagles are ready to see exactly what they can do following their 7-8-2 record last year.
“Unless you win the USCAA championship, the team goal from one year to the next is to improve,” Judson head coach Emanuel Stephens said. “Along with a much-needed influx of players to the roster, the Judson College soccer team is bringing a more aggressive mindset to the field this fall.
“This year will be a challenge, but 24 is the biggest side we have ever fielded.”
The extra numbers could go a long way in adding to the depth that is needed for the side that only saw 15 players last year.
“Like I said, it’s a good challenge with the amount of freshman we are bringing in,” Stephens said. “Now, though, we have a little bit of wiggle room. Last year we didn’t have anyone to step in if another person is injured. That can make us more successful.”
On top of the young group coming in, the Eagles will return eleven players who saw starting time last season including the two scorers from a year ago, senior Lisa Dundore and junior Rebecca Ream.
“It’s good to have the experience that will be laced in with the youth,” Stephens said. “The experience we have gives us hope that we can reach that goal of the USCAA national championship.”
Away from the pitch, the Judson women are planning to do some good in the community before the season even starts.
They will be holding a mission week in Marion the week of August 8-12 along with Sowing Seeds of Hope in Perry County.
Stephens said the team’s plans include cleaning up churches, helping with children at the Marion Library and working around town doing whatever needs to be done.
