Willie Jackson

Willie Jackson, 77, of Tyler, died on Sunday, June 15, 2008.

Funeral services was held 12 noon on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Mt.

Sinai Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Tommy Jones.

Interment was held in the Church yard cemetery under the direction of Bell Funeral Home.

James Calhoun Rutledge

James Calhoun Rutledge, 83, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2008. In November of 2007, he suffered a fall in which he broke his hip and then suffered a massive stroke causing pneumonia.

This he survived fairly well as a result of the great care of his wife, Bettye and his

daughter, Beverly. He later died as a result of complications from an infection.

Born on Sept. 19, 1924, he was a native of Selma, graduated from Albert G. Parrish High School where he met the love of his life, Bettye Joyce Ralston.

Afterwards, he entered Port Arthur College in Texas and went on to serve his country in the United States Army Air Force in the European Theater of

World War II. During his tour, he worked in radio and communications, specifically in the area of Morse Code and gunnery. He returned to Alabama to marry his true love, and together they raised their three daughters, Denise, Beverly and Bettye Lynn. During this time, he built about a dozen AM and FM radio stations throughout Alabama.

Also, he served his Selma community in many ways by installing his burglar alarm system in many local businesses and through his service as a lieutenant detective in the Selma Police Department where he retired.

Mr. Rutledge had a lifelong interest in electronics and in antique cars. Each year he participated in the Selma Pilgrimage Antique Car Show and RiverFront Market Day with his own collection of antique cars and provided cars from the British Car Club and the Car Club in Montgomery, both of which he was a member. He took great pleasure in attending the many antique car events with his grandson, Grand Alex, who is the youngest member of the British Car Club.

He also took great pleasure in attending his grandson’s Boy Scout ceremonies, as he was himself a Boy Scout. His accomplishments were vast and his desire for knowledge, along with his many abilities, awarded him numerous certificates of recognition. Years ago, Mr. Rutledge made one of the first electric cars and as recently as few years ago, he could be seen driving to First Baptist Church in a second version of his earlier electric car.

One of his last accomplishments was authoring the book “Alex’s Enigma,” which was published in 2004.

Mr. Rutledge is preceded in death by his parents, William D. Rutledge and Callie Roy Rutledge and his older brother, William Furniss Rutledge of Selma, Alabama. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Bettye Ralston Rutledge, he is survived by his three daughters: Anne Denise Rutledge from Florida, Beverly Jean Rutledge of Selma, Bettye Lynn Rutledge from Florida and one grandson, Grand Alex Rutledge-Boone from Selma.

“Jim,” as his friends called him, or “Calhoun,” as his wife referred to him, was known for his bright mind, wit, generosity, and his never-failing loyalty to his love, Bettye. He was always willing to lend his expertise in electronics, photography and automotives. While he will be greatly missed, his high standards, morality and strength of character, evident throughout his life, will live on through his daughters and his grandson.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, June 21, 2008, at Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 22, 2008, at First Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Cecil Williamson and the Rev. Jack Lovelace.

Interment will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery.

Active and honorary pallbearers will be Elton Ralston, Ed Ralston, Russell Ralston, Gordon McLendon, Mike Little, Randy Mobley, and Kenny Ross.

Richard Franklin Hughey

Richard Franklin Hughey, 88 of Sprott died Friday, June 20.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 23, at 2 p.m., at Ephesus Baptist Church, Sprott with the Rev. Henry Levert and the Rev.

John Ackerman officiating and Kirk Funeral Homes Marion Chapel directing.

Interment will be at the church cemetery.

He is survived by two sons, Dale (Rheta) Hughey of Birmingham and Randy (Michelle)

Hughey of Sprott; two daughters, Faye (Wayne) Swindal of Sprott, and Sandra (Billy) Reed of Selma; daughter-in-law, Monica R. Hughey; brother Haig Hughey; sister, Juliette Pitts; nine grandchildren, Marsha Prescott Dawn Shaw, Katrina Wooten, Richard Hughey, Karey Lane

Hughey, Jill Harper, Jan Hughey, Allison Taylor, Kyle Hughey; 11 great-grandchildren, Cody Prescott, Colter Prescott, Ted Wooten, Tanner Wooten, Reed Shaw, Anna Holt Shaw, Holley Shaw, Brittany Harper, Bailey Harper, Abbi Taylor and Coley Taylor.

Mr. Hughey was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Moseley Hughey and two children, Peggy H. Stone and Richard F. Hughey Jr. and son-in-law, Ed Stone.

Visitation will be held Sunday night, June 22, at Kirk Funeral Home. from 6 to 8 p.m.

Pallbearers are grandsons, Richard F. Hughey III and Kyle Hughey, and

grandsons-in-law, Shane Harper, Jeff Prescott, Jeff Shaw, Wade Taylor and Tim Wooten.

Richard Franklin Hughey was born on Jan. 18,1920, in Perry County.

His parents were Dee and Mary Holley Hughey. Mr Hughey was retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier at Sprott.

Ira Dell Brown

Ira Dell Brown, age 95, of Linden, AL, died Thursday June 19, 2008. She was preceded in death by her son Command Sgt. Maj., John A. Brown, U.S. Army, retired, grandson, Marlowe Tong and great grandson, Leon Tong sisters, Ethel Vick Friday, Mittie Rickard, Alice Wiggins, Vera Dickson, Laura Gates, Brothers Walter Vick, Dewey Vick, and Brooks Vick. Survivors include her son Lt. Col. J.T. Brown, USAF, retired and his wife Pauline R. Brown of Beavercreek, Ohio, grandson, David Brown and his wife Karyl Brown of Delaware County, Ohio, granddaughters, Susan Brown Ramsey and her husband, Thomas Ramsey of Germantown, Wisconsin, Nancy Brown Sanford and her husband Timothy Sanford, Chanin Tong of Beavercreek, OH, and Cathleen Tong DeFusco of Yellow Springs, Ohio;great grandchildren, Kennedy, Lyndsey, Sarah Elizabeth, Jacob Timothy, and Cayden; sister, Lillian Vick Clibery of Selma, and brother Sgt. Maj. George Willard Vick, U.S.Army, retired of Selma.

Services will be held Saturday June 21, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Lawrence Brown- Service Funeral Home with Rev. Ed Byrum officiating. Burial will follow at New Live Oak Cemetery. Pallbearers will be friends from Northside Baptist Church.

Leona Williams

Leona Williams, 100, of Orrville died Saturday, June 14,2008 at a local nursing home.

Funeral services will be held at noon Monday at Rising Star Baptist Church. The Rev. Curtis Williams will officiate. Burial will be held at Rising Star Cemetery.
