SELMA — Morgan Academy’s tennis teams got two easy wins Tuesday over Kingwood Academy and kept their strong year going.

The Morgan boys won, 6-1, and the girls won, 7-0. Morgan’s girls have only lost one singles match all year.

The only loss for the boys was from its No. 1 player Reed Stewart, who fell 6-2, 6-1 to Kingwood’s Jim Scott. Stewart did, however, avenge the loss when he and Jody Glover beat Scott and Derrick Lykins 6-1, 6-3 in doubles.

“Reed is our best player, but he doesn’t have the best record because he’s playing their best player,” Morgan tennis coach Baxter Stinson said. “Our doubles teams have been a bright spot. These guys have lost their singles matches and then come back and won doubles. We work a lot more, we think, on doubles that anybody else, and that’s why we’re good at it.”

Stinson said he noticed a lot of improvement in the teams this year, most notably girls’ No. 3 Laura Talton.

“Talton lost to the No. 3 girl from Fort Dale three times last year and this year she beat her,” Stinson said. “She simplified her stroke, and went back to the basics.”

That win was part of a match that ended Fort Dale’s 47-match winning streak that dated back to 2006.

Stinson said he sees progress in the players, and always keeps an eye on their mistakes.

“I want to see what’s the main cause of them losing points,” Stinson said. “Most of the time it’s hitting into the net, and the net never misses. Their attitude dictates the way they play. You can tell in their body language how they’re feeling and how they’re playing.”
