Irby Construction tried to make sure its game Monday against Tabernacle Baptist Church was put away as soon as possible.

A nine-run first inning pretty much did the trick.

Irby capitalized on a strong early scoring effort and cruised to a 17-1 win in 11-12 slowpitch softball action at the Sportsplex.

Irby’s order batted around in the top of the first, and the first five batters scored. Leadoff hitter Deseray Strong scored twice. Strong also got the win on the mound.

Tabernacle put its only run on the board in the bottom of the first when Morgan Rich hit an RBI double to score Alicia Doss.

Irby took it from there. Strong struck out two consecutive batters with the bases loaded in the third.

Aerika Young started a five-run third inning with an RBI single, and that capped scoring for the game.
