Just in time for school, Selma and Dallas County will again hold its tax-free holiday Aug. 5 through 7.

A release from the Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce said a number of items are included under the exemption, and there are limitations.

“This covers clothing, school supplies, books and computer equipment,” the release said. “There is a $1 limit per item.”

Dallas County Probate Judge Kim Ballard said commissioners voted to get on board with the sales tax holiday years ago. Rather than approve the holiday each year, Ballard said they approved a resolution that rolls over each year.

“We did that a while back and it makes it a lot easier,” he said. “It has always been well-received by the public. The reports we get back from businesses say that people really come out. And, it’s always near the start of school.”

The chamber released a list of clothing items that are exempt. Clothing items include: Belts, boots, caps, coats, diapers, dresses, gloves, gym suits, hats, hosiery, jackets, jeans, neckties, pajamas, pants, raincoats, robes, sandals, scarves, school uniforms, shirts, shoes, shorts, socks, sneakers and underwear.

These include general use clothing items under $100.

There are also a number of school supplies on the list of exemptions.

These include: Binders, blackboard chalk, book bags, calculators, cellophane tape, composition books, crayons, folders, glue and paste, highlighters, index cards and boxes, legal pads, lunch boxes, markers, notebooks, paper, pencil and school supply boxes, pencil sharpeners, pencils and erasers, pens, protractors, rulers, scissors and writing tablets.

Art supplies include clay, glazes, paints, paintbrushes for art and sketch and drawing pads.

Instruction maps and globes, as well as required textbooks more than $30 and less than $50 on an official school supply list are also included.

Certain books are also exempt from the list. However, they must be bound materials with an ISBN number and a sales price of $30 or less.

Desktops, laptops and tower computers bundled with a monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers under $750 are also included.

Computer storage media like CDs and DVDs, educational computer software, handheld electronic schedulers (not including cell phones), personal digital assistants and printer supplies like paper and ink are also included.
