Selma All-Stars falls out

For Selma Dixie Major All-Star coach Robert Massey, Friday’s loss to Auburn was disappointing because his team wasn’t “ready to play.”
After Saturday morning’s loss to Sheffield and resulting elimination from the state tournament, Massey was disappointed for another reason.
“We didn’t take advantage of the countless opportunities they gave us today and they took full advantage of the mistakes we made,” Massey said following the 7-3 loss. “We simply didn’t show any patience at the plate and that hurt us.”
Throughout the game, Selma left nearly a dozen runners on base and couldn’t capitalize on 10 walks granted by Sheffield pitchers.
“I really felt we were good enough to play at least into Sunday,” Massey said. “I think Auburn is the best team here, but I felt we were good enough to play further into the weekend.”
Sheffield, with the win, advances to a Sunday matchup against Auburn, who beat Opp 4-1 late Saturday night.
In being eliminated, the season is now over for the Selma team.
“We had a real good bunch of kids,” Massey said. “Problem is, we ended up laying just one good ball game. Auburn (lost 11-1) hammered us Friday night and we don’t seem to have recovered.”
Massey, even with the loss, was proud of his team.
“I hate it for the kids. It’s always tough to lose your last game,” Massey said. “But, you know … the sun will come up in the morning.”
