Donations from a Montgomery business will keep dogs and cats at the Selma-Dallas County Animal Shelter well fed for quite a while.

Cargill employee and Dallas County natives Jud and Casey Hewston arrived at the shelter Wednesday with 3,180 pounds of dog food, 36 gallons of bleach and a number of other items for dogs and cats.

The donation, Casey said, was inspired by an advertisement for the shelter’s annual yard sale.

“We saw an ad in the paper not too long ago about the yard sale and I cut it out and sent it to my husband’s employer, Cargill,” she said. “They said they would donate food and stuff, and we knew they needed Clorox and cat litter. We didn’t want to leave the cats out.”

The donation, Jud said, was a perfect fit for his company.

“We are in the business of feeding animals,” he said. “We want to try to do all we can to help.”

Cargill is an international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial and industrial products and services. Pet and farm animal foods are among the company’s product lines.

Shelter representative Sherry Marter said a donation that size is huge for the shelter.

“It helps tremendously,” she said. “All the kennels are full, so we need all the help we can get. We always appreciate any donations we can get.”
