Dr. Monica Newton is a candidate for the Ward 3 seat on the Selma City Council.

Newton has lived in Ward 3 for seven years. As a resident, she and her husband, Dr. Wylie Newton, have taken an active role in crime prevention and neighborhood development. She began the Old Town Neighborhood Watch program, which won national awards for “National Night Out,” a crime prevention activity, two years ago. She has taken her experience with Neighborhood Watch by starting and chairing the Selma-Dallas County Citizen’s Corps Council, an organization sponsored by the governor’s Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives. The council plans crime prevention activities and disaster preparedness.

Additionally, Newton has served the city on the Selma Crime Task Force and the recent police chief advisory search committee.

Newton pledges hard work, cooperation and accountability in government as a member of the city council to help Selma reach its full potential. Especially, she would emphasize code enforcement, infrastructure improvements and crime reduction in Ward 3 and the city.

Newton received her medical degree from Midwestern University in Chicago and finished her family medicine residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is employed at UAB Selma Family Medicine, where she is an assistant professor of family medicine.

She also serves as regional vice president of the Alabama Academy of Family Physicians. Locally, she is the chairperson of the Vaughan Regional Ethics Committee and is the healthcare chairperson of the Selma Renaissance Committee.

She and her husband have a son, Jackson.
