A little card issued by Dallas County may save residents a lot on prescription costs.

The Dallas County Commission doled out the first of the CountyDrugCard discount prescription cards to several residents during the commission’s meeting Monday.

The cards are available to the public now and at no cost to the county, said Probate Judge Kim Ballard.

Commissioner Connell Towns of District 1 got the idea for the prescription cards from a co-worker who lives in Wilcox County. Knowing how costs of medicines cuts into a budget, Towns said he researched the card idea.

“This is a discount card for the public,” Towns said. “There is no limit. All drug stores have been contacted, and they will accept these cards.”

County residents may pick up their cards at the Human Resources Department in the Dallas County Courthouse Annex or from a county commissioner, Towns said.

The program is operated by Rex Bowden Jr. of Baton Rouge, La., under the umbrella YourRXCard. Bowden began the program because he did not believe counties should have to pay fees to offer a quality prescription discount card. The National Association of Counties charges its members various fees for its prescription discount program.
