Help the hands that build

A local organization in Selma brings together people who build, quite literally, community.
It’s Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. The organization invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses in partnership with families in need.
Through volunteer labor and donations of dollars and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates houses next to homeowners.
But this is not a giveaway program. Homeowners have to work on their houses; come up with a down payment and take on a mortgage. Habitat doesn’t make a profit off the houses. The money from the mortgage payments are used to build other homes.
But every organization needs assistance. Here, in Selma, the folks at Habitat are asking for your help at a fundraiser set for April 1.
It’s the seventh annual fundraiser with auction from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Carl Morgan Convention Center.
You get plenty for your money. Some of the best cooks in Selma will give you a taste of what it’s like to eat in their restaurants. In addition, there’s the packaged auction items.
Using hands to help others help themselves: Most people complain not enough of this is accomplished.
Well, here’s an opportunity to reach out and assist one group that uses hands for a good purpose.
