Slow, steady progress.

That seems to have been the theme of the Central Christian girls’ team over the past three years.

When athletic director Darrell Walker took over as coach of the team three years ago, two-win seasons were the norm.

In his first year, the Warriors won nine games. Last season, they won 11. This season, the team has made school history with 14 wins with three games left to play.

“It’s all about fundamentals,” Walker said. “The team had no knowledge about fundamentals when I first got here. They’ve just worked hard and played hard every night.”

Continuity also helps. This group has been together the entire time and is only losing one senior.

Tiffany Brown and Erikka Caldwell have emerged as team leaders for a team that has taken its lumps over the past few seasons.

That’s paid off in the top spot in the area and a No. 9 ranking in the state.

“Tiffany Brown is one of the hardest workers on the team, and Erikka Caldwell is a great scorer,” Walker said.

Seventh grader Kara Rawls has been a pleasant surprise as a third option in CCA’s offense. She flashes a strong outside shooting game and is big enough to score close to the goal.

“She helps us out as an extra scorer, and teams are going to have to deal with her for years to come,” Walker said.
