Mr. Paul Lewellen

Mr. Paul Lewellen of Marion Junction, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at a local nursing home.

Mr. Lewellen was a World War II Army veteran and a survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris R. Lewellen; a daughter, Sherry Lewellen Tyler and two brothers, J.C. Lewellen, and Rudolph Lewellen.

Mr. Lewellen is survived by his sons, Paul R. Lewellen, and Thomas Gregg Lewellen; six grandchildren, Paul Lewellen Jr., Jennifer Lewellen Garrison, Thomas Gregg Lewellen Jr., Michael Shawn Tyler Jr., Heather Lewellen Watson and Jessie Collen Lewellen; great-grandchildren, Hannah Brooke Lewellen, Paul R. Lewellen III, Logan Tyler, Megan T. Garrison and Cameron Allen Watson; his step-father, Edward Cooper; brother, Noel Cooper; sisters, Nelda Johnson, Sandra Dickson and Joyce Ross.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2007, at the Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with the Rev. Preston Johnson officiating.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007.

Pallbearers will be Curtis Lewellen, Darrell Cooper, Tommy Lewellen Jr., Gary Lewellen, Paul Lewellen Jr. and Todd Cooper.

Honorary pallbearers are Shawn Tyler, Rudy Lewellen and Glenn Lewellen.

Louretta Johnson Carter

Mrs. Louretta Johnson Carter, 97, of Selma has died.

She was born Aug. 5, 1910, to the late Sallie Johnson Jackson and was the second-born of two children.

Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by a brother, William &8220;Teddy&8221; Johnson.

She was married to John C. Carter II, who preceded her in death.

At an early age, Mrs. Carter confessed Christ, was baptized and joined First Baptist church where she remained and served as an active, loyal and faithful member until her health prevented her from church activities.

She served as a Sunday school class secretary, a Baptist Training Union leader, a member of the Senior Choir No. 2 and treasurer of the Northeast Unit of the Missionary Society.

Friends and family say it was a joy for her to visit and help the sick and assist with those in need. She provided a home for children away from home.

Mrs. Carter received her elementary and high school diplomas from Daniel Payne Academy in Selma.

She is survived by her son, John (Sally) Carter III of Newport News, Va.; two daughters, Louretta C. Wimberly and Pearlie M. (John) Davis of Chicago; grandchildren, Robert (Nancy) Davis, Denise Davis, Curtis C. Wimberly, Gloria (Moses) Shears and Carolyn Elliott; four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; a nephew, James (Rosie)McGrue; a special cousin, Johnnie Weaver; numerous cousins; four godchildren, Carrie Barnes, David (Doris) English, Evelyn (John) Gilliard and Vanessa Goodwin; and loving friends.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Alvin A. Cleveland Sr. officiating.

Lewis Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers are Harry Crum, Wilson Young, Paul Oliver Jr., Warren W. Young, William Powell, Odell Jackson and Lawrence McGrue.

Honorary pallbearers are the deacons and trustee boards of First Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in memory of Mrs. Carter to the First Baptist church stained glass window restoration project or Cahaba Hospice Inc. in Selma.
