Anne Coleman Hooper Stavrolakes

Anne Coleman Hooper Stavrolakes died at 7:00pm on August 21, 2011 in Nyack, New York.  She was the beloved mother of Rena Stavrolakes of New York City.

Ms. Stavrolakes was born in Selma on November 30, 1934, daughter of Rena Belle Cox Hooper and Richard Coleman Hooper Sr.  She spent her childhood in Selma and most of her adult life in New York City.

Ms. Stavrolakes attended Sweetbriar College and graduated from the University of Alabama where she was an award winning student in the prestigious creative writing program there.  She later studied fiction writing with Martha Foley at Columbia University where she met a fellow writer, Aristedes Stavrolakes, whom she married.  Ms. Stavrolakes was published in various literary magazines and a scholarship recipient of a Bread Loaf writing residency at Middlebury College.  She was also a founding member of the Mental Patients Liberation Project.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her brother, Richard Coleman Hooper Jr., Cokie and by her parents.  Memorial gifts can be made to the Selma Dallas County Public Library, becky@selmalibrary.org.
