The Lowndes Academy Rebels got it done in the air and on the ground as they blew past Ellwood Christian 47-6.
Though the Rebels kept the ball on the ground most of the night, quarterback Hank McIntosh still had a strong night going 8-for-9 for 70 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Garrett Headley, who turned in three catches for 50 yards and both scores.
Lowndes head coach Art Sullivan said the game was a great chance for his team to get in the win column and gain experience.
“We are a young team, so it was good for us to get some experience,” he said. “It helped us gain some confidence and let these young players get to feel what it is like to win. This helped us gain some depth.”
The Rebels wasted little time getting on the board as they opened the game with a six play, 65-yard drive that ended with Toby King, who had 89 yards on seven carries, running through the Eagle defense for a 1-yard score and the first of his three touchdowns on the night.
Wesley McMicken added the extra point giving the Rebels a 7-0 lead with 9:39 to go in the first.
Lowndes struck again on their next possession when McIntosh hit Headley on a screen for a 14-yard touchdown. Garrett Nall took the two-point conversion in to make the score 15-0 with 4:56 to go.
After taking over on downs at the Ellwood 41, Lowndes put together a five play drive that ended with King finding the end zone from two yards out to make the score 21-0 with 11:19 to go in the half.
It took only one play for Lowndes to widen the gap on their next possession. Headley hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass and went into the end zone untouched to make the score 27-0 with 8:53 to go in the half. McMicken hit the extra point to make it 28-0.
The Rebels added one more score when McIntosh found Nall for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 2:31 to go in the half to cap a six play, 66-yard drive.
The Rebels opened the second half equally as dominant when King took the ball 34 yards on the Rebels’ first play from scrimmage to put Lowndes up 40-0 with 8:01 to go in the third quarter. Scribner hit the extra point to make it 41-0.
The Rebels ended their scoring in the fourth quarter when Hunter Johnson went up the middle for 12 yards and a touchdown to make the score 47-0 after a failed extra point with 11:06 to play. Though they were behind, the Eagles did not quit. Ellwood finally found the end zone on a fourth and 30 play from the 38 yard line when quarterback Jaylen Furlow found Deriaun Glenn for a 62-yard touchdown pass to make the score 47-6. The try for two failed.
