The Selma Police Department made two arrests Friday in the Wednesday shooting of an 18-year-old Selma man.

Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley said the department took 39-year-old Leon Surles into custody Friday and later arrested Frank Surles as well.

Both have been charged with attempted murder and are being held under $250,000 bond.

“(Leon) was arrested (Friday) and appears to be a Selma native,” he said.

The other suspect, Riley said, Frank Surles, was arrested at just after 6 p.m. Friday.

According to Selma Police Department Lt. Johnny King, officers responded to the emergency room at Vaughan Regional Medical Center at around 10 p.m. to reports of an 18-year-old shooting victim with a gunshot wound to the back.

The incident occurred at J&J Trailer Park on Old Montgomery Highway.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was likely in the wrong place at the wrong time, King said.

The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, though King said Thursday he believes the victim was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was not the intended target.
