Hub Maroney and Wayne Robinson both joked that their golf games aren’t very good, but they must be doing something right.
The two will represent Selma and Dallas County in the 15th annual Masters Games State Golf Tournament. The two-day event will be held Oct. 1-2 at Valley Grande Golf Course.
Joking aside, the tournament really is about more than the competition.
“It’s just a day of fun,” said Robinson, who will play in the 75-79 age group. “It’s usually catered, and we have a snack before we go out and golf. It’s a lot of fun; of course, some people get pretty upset over the way they play.”
Local golfers usually fare well in the tournament. They will have the advantage this year of playing on a course close to home.
“There are just good golfers here,” said Maroney, who is also in the 75-79 flight. “They all probably play a lot, and they’re good athletes. At our age, you have to play the game and practice more than younger people. I play twice a week Wednesday and Friday. We have a group at the Selma Country Club that plays.”
But Maroney doesn’t think playing at a local course will give local golfers that big of an edge.
“It probably gives us a little bit of an advantage because we’re used to playing there,” Maroney. “But it’s not much advantage because there are really good golfers everywhere I’ve been.”
Even if the golfers are advanced in age, it shouldn’t be a surprise if they put on a show.
“There are a lot of good players at this age. Some of them go above 80,” Robinson said. “There are some pretty decent players, even at that age.”
