There’s a group of volunteers in Dallas County who are trained and ready in the event of an emergency, such as a natural disaster.

The Citizens Corps recognizes September as National Preparedness month.

They have joined with the Dallas County Emergency Management Agency to bring disaster preparedness to the minds of local residents.

To do that, they have planned a fun-filled weekend this Friday and Saturday at the Selma Mall.

A Kids Day will be held and 14 schools are scheduled to participate on Friday.

That means about 1,100 area school children will see demonstrations and have the opportunity to hear from emergency personnel.

Alabama State Troopers will have its crash rollover simulator on display.

In addition, there will be at least one tornado simulator, fire trucks, ambulances and other emergency response vehicles on display.

Free information CDs will be available, a poster contest will be held, there will be door prizes, drawings for disaster preparedness kits and all sorts of giveaways.

The events on Saturday will focus on families and senior adults. Entertainment will be provided for all ages.

Although fun is planned, the goal of the National Preparedness Month is to increase public awareness of the importance of being ready for a disaster.
