Selma had a ‘Wyatt Earp-type’

To the Editor:
If your regular columnist was living in Selma during the 1960s, he may remember that Selma and Dallas County had a “Wyatt Earp-type tough guy” back then. His name was Jim Clark, and he left a stain and stench on the reputation of this community that was noted all over the world and will be remembered for a long time.
One of the many problems with a person like that is they are prone to use their fist as a substitute for their brain in all too many cases.
In my opinion, we should look for a law enforcement officer who is highly intelligent, street smart and of absolute integrity.
The tone of the entire editorial reminds me of something that a colonel once said to a group of us lieutenants and captains. He said, “Any fool can get into a war, but it takes a pretty smart man to stay out of one on his terms.”
