Though the summer kickoff for the Yellow Dot program has ended, enrollments are ongoing.

Throughout the summer months, representatives of the Dallas County Emergency Management Agency and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office, traveled throughout the county to bring the program to the citizens. Though the visits have ended for now, kits and stickers are still available, Dallas County EMA director Rhonda Abbott said.

“People can still come to the EMA office in the courthouse Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,” Abbott said. “We will be happy to assist them.”

The program, which is free, places a yellow dot in the rear window of a vehicle alerting first responders to vital information stored in a yellow envelope located in the glove compartment. This will ensure citizens receive the medical attention they need if they are involved in a crash.

The program to Selma was a team effort between first responders, Evelyn Cox and the RSVP program among others. Program coordinator Lora Weaver of the Northeast Alabama Traffic Safety Office said the program will allow those who participate to communicate with first responders if they are involved in a crash.

“It can actually be your voice in a situation where you can’t speak for yourself,” she said. “More importantly, it can be a tool for first responders that can save your life.”

The yellow dots can be placed on as many vehicles as a person wants and can even be used for people who are frequent passengers.

From June through August, several churches and organizations held enrollments. Though the consistent schedule is over, Abbott said they welcome anyone to host additional programs.

“We have had some churches call and say they want to do that,” she said. “We don’t have a set schedule, but we will help people out if they want to host enrollments.”
