To find out your kids are really listening to what was said somewhere in their eight years of growing up is very rewarding.

About 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, Aug. 3, two boys, Garrett Grantham and Caleb Lester, were riding their bikes on Midland Road when they saw a fire on the baseball practice field behind the Meadowview Public School.

They went home and told their grandparents to call 911 because there was a fire behind the school. Melvin Lester, Caleb’s grandfather, went over to the field and started putting it out.

The fire department was called and arrived about the time Melvin had put the last flame out. They watered the whole area so it would not flare up again and did a good job of separating the trash and the grass that was still smoking.

The boys are to be congratulated for knowing what to do when they see a fire burning. It could have caused a lot of damage if it had not been for their fast thinking. I think we have a couple of heroes on our hands.
