Now that representatives from Volkert & Associates, Inc. and Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood, Inc. have presented the projected interior building plans of the new Selma High School, and members of the community have expressed their concerns pertaining to the plans, both parties can move toward discussing the exterior of the building.

The former school board began in 2007 talking with Leon Barkan, vice president of program construction management, to assess the current building, as well as secure $20 million of the federal stimulus funds from the Qualified School Construction Bond. This was added to the $7 million the school system has saved as part of the capital funds.

“The building, although having various levels of renovation over the years, had some really difficult challenges to overcome,” Barkan said,. Safety is the main concern, and the clear halls and lack of hidden corners should help maintain control.

The new building will be constructed around the current building.
