According to rural health statistics, there are more than 4,000 people in Alabama suffering from diabetes, and 15 percent of that number live in Dallas County.
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Alabama Department of Public Health will offer those with diabetes solutions through its second annual Diabetes Education Conference on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center.
“Diabetes is a major health issue in our county,” County Extension Coordinator Callie Nelson said. “This conference is designed to educate those living with diabetes, caregivers of those living with diabetes and professionals who work daily with diabetics.”
The conference, Nelson said, will cover such topics as knowing your medications, the benefits of exercise in managing diabetes, how diabetes affects your eyesight, healthy cooking tips and preventing diabetes in our children.
“The first 50 persons will receive a free health screening — blood pressure and diabetes,” Nelson said. “All participants will receive over $25 worth of materials and supplies to aid in the management of diabetes.”
Nelson said all interested participants must register by Friday, Sept. 16. Individuals may pick up a registration form at the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, located at 429 Lauderdale St. Make all checks or money orders payable to Alabama Cooperative Extension — Diabetes Education Conference, and send them to P.O. Box 40, Selma, 36702.
Nelson encourages all members of the community — including family, friends and healthcare professionals, to attend.
