An employee with a local fast food establishment was robbed while making a deposit in a night drop at a downtown bank.

Police said the night manager of Sonic was surprised when she arrived at the RBC Centura Bank night depository on Broad Street just before 1 a.m. Monday, when an unknown assailant stepped out of the alley nearby and shots rang out.

“A subject came around the corner and said ‘hey,’ and fired two shots,” said Lt. David Evans. “The young lady dropped the money bag and fled to her car. A second subject came around the corner and grabbed the bag and they fled.”

Evans said police are looking for the two suspects, who got away with an undetermined amount of cash and checks from the restaurant’s sales. He said some robberies might be avoided if businesses called the SPD and requested an escort, service officers commonly provide free of charge.

“A number of businesses will call an officer for an escort,” Evans said. “We’re glad to provide an escort. They just have to keep in mind they may have to wait for a few minutes for the officer to get there.”
