At times, watching sports is a bigger dilemma than it is a release.

When will Barry Bonds hit his next home run?

Are the Cavaliers really good enough to beat the Spurs?

When the heck are gas prices going to come down?

Hey, I drive a truck, and I travel a lot. What do you want from me?

Anyway, I find sometimes that I am an unsatisfied sports fan. Of course, if sports fans were ever truly satisfied, the time-space continuum would tear, and cosmic gases would cause the galaxy to implode.

There is a point to this column, I swear.

I just have to wonder if some things are as important as we think they are and if other things should be blown up a little more.

For instance …

5. Is Duke lacrosse an inspiring story? – The program was dead, shame was cast upon the school and young men lost a year of playing time (which the NCAA has granted back).

A year later, the Blue Devils nearly beat St. John’s in one of the most exciting final games in history.

But a series of poor decisions really made the story – poor decisions by the players and poor decisions by prosecutor Mike Nifong.

So is this a great comeback story or a case of “You get what you deserve?”

4. Does MLB’s fight on steroids really matter? – They’ll never get enough cooperation from the players union to adequately identify all the antagonists.

Even if that happened, I’m pretty sure the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown would literally be torn apart with all the evidence found.

And in a larger sense, this country has been funding a war on all illegal drugs for more than two decades.

How close are we to any solution?

3. What is the greatest sports movie of all time? – It’s either “Rudy” or “Bull Durham,” but you may have your own thoughts on that.

2. Are high school athletes in trouble? – A friend of mine called me out for making light of the nuclear meltdown of minor league manager Phillip Wellman last week.

Things like that, he said, go straight to a kid’s head and makes him think it’s okay to be aggressive to the point of obscenity.

These are the same kids that will experiment with performance enhancing drugs because that’s all they hear about when they watch the pros play.

1. Are the New York Knicks really that bad? – Yes, they are, and they’re not getting better any time soon.
