Local buzz surrounding Selma High School’s production of the critically acclaimed Broadway musical “Dreamgirls” has spawned an encore performance.

The SHS band and choir will return to the stage on Friday, June 1 at 7 p.m. at J.A. Pickard Auditorium, said Lynn Henderson, attendance and public relations coordinator, on Tuesday.

“Dreamgirls” made its debut on May 17 at The Miss Kitti Theatre of the Performing Arts. The premiere event was previously scheduled at the more spacious Pickard Auditorium, but scheduling conflicts caused the change of venue.

Latresha Woods, choir director, and Brandon Williams, band director, made the joint decision to bring “Dreamgirls” to Selma, saying the musical “would be a good show for the students to do.” Cast members have been practicing since March; perfecting each musical note and choreographed step.

“(The students) are so excited about doing ‘Dreamgirls,'” said Woods in a previous report.

“Dreamgirls,” which originally made its debut in 1981, is based on the aspirations and successes of rhythm and blues acts of the 1960s. The musical is perhaps best known for the power ballad “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” The SHS production also features the songs “Move,” “Cadillac Car,” “Dreamgirls,” and “Steppin’ to the Bad Side.”
