A Selma man remains in jail with no bond following a Sunday incident.

According to Selma Chief of Police William T. Riley, Rufus Hunter Jr., 36, was taken into custody at about 1:55 a.m. Sept. 11 on charges of shooting into an occupied vehicle and domestic violence and assault.

Riley said the report was filed at about 1 a.m. when the victim informed officers of the incident.

“The victim said she was asleep when her boyfriend, Hunter, came to the home and had been drinking,” he said. “They got into an argument and he became upset with her.”

The victim then went into another room with her children and attempted to leave. As she was pulling away, she said the offender came outside with a 12-gauge shotgun and fired several shots, striking the vehicle.

Fortunately, Riley said, no one was injured by the shots.

“None of the children or her were hurt by the gunshots, but during the altercation prior to her leaving, the suspect did grab her, shake her, and hit her several times in the face with his fist,” he said.

The victim said as she was leaving the suspect also made threats to the victim saying “if you call the police I will kill you and your family.”

Hunter was placed in the Dallas County Jail under four counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle as well as domestic violence charges. He is still being held without bond.

Riley said officers recovered the weapon they believe to be used in the shooting. He said it appears as if Hunter tried to take the gun apart.

Riley said the department is still investigating the incident to make sure Hunter has no other past charges.
