GREENSBORO – A Greensboro man pled guilty to the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend in Hale County Circuit Court Monday.

Raymond Long, 40, faces 20 years to life in prison for shooting his ex-girlfriend, Cassandra Edwards, in the head and neck, said District Attorney Michael Jackson. Long will be sentenced on June 12 once a pre-sentence report is complete.

On Christmas Day 2004, Long drove to Edwards’ house on 1590 Raven Road in Greensboro. According to police reports, Long was upset because Edwards had not visited him in two days as if “she did not want to be with him anymore.”

“I told him to get out of my house, cursing over my children,” Edwards stated in the police report.

When Edwards told Long to leave, Long told her he wanted her to get her clothes out of his truck.

While Long went back to his truck, Edwards dialed 911. Long then returned and threw Edward’s clothes all over the house.

When Edwards attempted to shut the door, Long pulled out a .25-caliber pistol and fired three shots at Edwards, striking her once in the neck and twice in the head.

Long immediately fled the residence.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene and Edwards was transported to the hospital. Edwards survived the attack.

Jackson said there’s no excuse for Long’s “cowardly act.”

“We will continue to take a hard line on criminals who commit domestic violence,” Jackson said.

“We are going to send this defendant to prison for a long time. The victim is lucky to be alive.”
