Stop running red lights

Do people run red lights in Selma?
Anyone who drives know that is the case.
Eventually, someone will be killed because we have gotten so busy trying to get where we are going that we don’t obey the traffic laws.
Does that mean we need surveillance cameras at intersections to snap pictures of the tags of those who violate the law?
Mayor James Perkins Jr. has asked Police Chief Jimmy Martin to look into just such action.
Cities that have installed surveillance cameras send a fine to the violator – and raise city revenue in the process.
It would be nice to believe that we could just depend on drivers to stop at red lights, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Even so, there are other alternatives if your goal is to protect citizens.
One such alternative is to keep the lights red a little longer, giving those who are coming to a stop more time to do so before the oncoming traffic gets their green light to proceed.
Of course, we could appeal to a person’s sense of community and humanity and encourage drivers to be cautious and obey traffic laws because it’s the safe thing to do.
Surely, we can watch out for one another without having to have Big Brother watching us.
