The Commission Courtroom was filled as the new District 4 County Commissioner was sworn in.

holding the Bible and pastor Gary Crum by his side, Clifford Hunter was sworn in by Dallas County Circuit Judge Marvin Wiggins at 2 p.m. Monday at the Court House Annex.

“I am now ready to take on the role, duty and responsibilities of the role of newly-appointed County Commissioner of District 4,” Hunter said. “I plan to do what is right and what is fair for this community.”

The ceremony was short, but the courtroom was filled with family, friends and local officials wanting to wish Hunter well.

“I think it’s a good appointment. I think he’ll do a good job. I’m looking forward to working with him,” said Billy Atchison of Alabama Power.

Also present at the ceremony was District Attorney Michael Jackson.

“I think he’s going to do a good job,” Jackson said. “I think he’s going to work hard for the people of Dallas County and I think he will be able to work with the other commissioners to move this county forward.”

Hunter was appointed to the County Commission by Gov. Bob Riley on Feb. 5.

“I think it’s a great day for Dallas County,” said Gary Crum, pastor of Ellwood Community Church.

“First I want to thank the Governor for being able to make this appointment, to be assured of (Hunter’s) competence and his integrity and his knowledge about the community.”

Commissioner Curtis Williams also witnessed the swearing in of his now fellow commissioner.

“We’re looking forward to working with him,” Williams said. “We’re hoping we have a good working relationship.”

Hunter’s asked his proud mother, Brenda, to “have a word to say” following his speech.

Brenda told the crowd that she has instilled in her children that no one is right all of the time, but if you try to do what’s right, “right will follow you.”

“Work with him,” she said. “Talk with him.”

Hunter stated that he was “happy, happy, happy.”

“To God be the glory for the things that He has done and that He will continue to do, not just through me, but for the people of this great county.”
