mapleSVILLE – Holding up to expectations, No. 7 Dallas County was dominant in a win over Maplesville Friday night.
The Hornets had 11-0 runs late in both halves and pulled away for an 89-61 win over its county line rival.
Thomas King led DCHS with 19 points. Percy Harrell hit four 3-pointers to account for 12 of the Hornets’ final 14 points in the first half, and he scored 16 in the game.
Nick Andrews scored a game-high 21 points for Maplesville and knocked down three 3-pointers.
DCHS did the majority of its damage from behind the arc, hitting 14 3-pointers in the contest. Maplesville sank five shots from long range.
M.J. Wilson hit a triple to tie the game at 12 with 3:16 to go in the first quarter. That was the first time the Red Devils threatened to lead the entire night, and they never got another shot the rest of the game.
A 6-2 run to end the first put the Hornets ahead 22-15.
Layups from Wilson and Brian Bailey cut DCHS’ lead to 25-21 with 6:29 left in the second.
The Hornets’ 11 unanswered points to end the half gave them a 51-30 advantage.
Maplesville’s offense came close to breaking through almost the entire night. But every time the Devils looked to be mounting a run, DCHS got a defensive stop or popped an outside shot.
The Hornets’ second 11-0 stretch came with 3:40 left in the ball game and put them ahead 80-56.
Both Brandon Holmes and Andrae Nelson had 10 for the Hornets.
Rod Nix had 16 points in the paint for Maplesville, and Bailey had nine.
Maplesville forward Morgan Hamner led all scorers with 18 points in the Red Devils’ 46-34 comeback win over Dallas County.
Jamie Deloach joined Hamner in double figures with 10 points.
DCHS’ Shaneeka James scored eight of her team-high 10 points in the first half, and helped the Hornets take a 23-15 lead after the first two quarters.
The Hornets scored 12 points off turnovers in the first half, and took control of momentum with an 11-0 run that spanned the 5:10 mark of the first quarter to the 7:16 mark of the second.
They pulled ahead further with a 5-0 spurt to make it a 23-11 ball game with 3:37 to play in the first half.
But DCHS slowed down coming out of the locker room, and Maplesville caught fire.
The Devils took their first lead of the ball game after an 8-2 run put them ahead 27-25 with 4:11 left in the third.
A Bianca Heard layup the next time down the floor tied things up, but DCHS never got any closer.
Maplesville scored nine of the game’s next 11 points and led 36-29 with 7:09 to play in the game.
Kassandra Bell added nine for Maplesville.
Kim Ross scored seven for the Hornets.
