A new year signifies a new look for some Dallas County Schools, says Administrative Assistant Freeman Waller.

Waller addressed the county school board at its first meeting of 2007 Thursday night to report school building and

grounds improvements. Bleachers were installed at Martin Middle and Keith High schools in preparation for baseball/softball season. Martin’s bleachers seat 180 while Keith’s seat 360.

“And I have to say they look good,” Waller said.

Waller went on to announce the installation of several awnings at Southside High, B.K. Craig Elementary and Southside Primary to protect students from inclement weather conditions. Keith and Dallas County High School will also receive awnings in high foot traffic areas. In addition to a new awning, the walkway from the cafeteria to the bus loading area at DCHS will be paved.

Lastly, Waller indicated plastic dividers have replaced metal urinal partitions at DCHS, Five Points Elementary and Salem Elementary.

The total cost of these school improvements is $125,000, Waller said.

In other business:

The Alabama Black Belt Arts Education Initiative awarded a $21,000 pilot grant to Martin Middle School.

Superintendent Dr. Fannie Major-McKenzie presented a plaque to Southside High School teacher Brenda Holder. Holder recently received her National Board Certification, which is regarded as the teaching profession’s top honor. As a result of her achievement, Holder will be awarded $10,000 by the State Department of Education – $5,000 for her classroom and $5,000 for personal use. “We’re so proud of you,” McKenzie told Holder. Holder responded, “This is so exciting. “This means so much to me.”

McKenzie proclaimed the month of January as School Board Member Recognition month and awarded certificates to county school board members.

Dallas County Professional Education Association President Dorothy Irvin also recognized school board members as part of School Board Member Recognition Month, presenting them with certificates.

Irvin thanked members “for all your hard work and caring and concern for our boys and girls, teachers and support staff of the Dallas County School System.”

Retiree Judy Kyser was honored for her 18 years of service with the Dallas County School System.

The board unanimously approved monthly financial reports for October, November and December 2006.

The next school board meeting is set for Monday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. at the school board office, 429 Lauderdale St., Selma.
