PLANTERSVILLE – After losing nine games this past season, the Dallas County football team can count another loss.
Coach Trey Baggett will not return for the 2007 season, according to school principal Don Ingram.
Baggett is leaving after spending just one year with the Hornets, a season in which their only win came in Week 5.
“He’s decided not to return, and it was more or less a joint decision,” Ingram said. “He felt like this was not the right place and the wrong time. We just moved up to 5A this season, and that was rough.”
Baggett will remain with the school until the end of the year and teach math.
Ingram said the search for a replacement might not begin immediately.
“As far as looking for a replacement, right now we’re talking with central office about whether to do it now or wait until the spring time,” he said. “We’ll make a decision in the next week or two. It’s going to be a statewide search. We’ll put our ad on the Internet on the AHSAA Web site for at least two weeks.
“We’ve already had some calls showing interest.”
The next coach of the Hornets will be their third in as many years.
DCHS had begun the year on a four-game losing streak before beating Keith in the Hornets’ homecoming game.
They ended the 2006 season with a 56-13 loss to Selma.
