Evelyn Cox says volunteerism is about Agape Love &045; to serve and expect nothing in return.

That love has led Cox to direct the resurgence of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Selma and Dallas County. Founded in 1966, RSVP is a nationwide program that enlists senior adults ages 55 and older to serve as community volunteers. RSVP currently boasts over 9,000 volunteers who contribute more than two million service hours annually.

A 2004 retiree of the Alabama Historic Commission and a 1989 retiree of the General Electric Corporation, Cox revived RSVP in August.

Cox said the Thomasville RSVP oversees its programs in Choctaw, Washington, Marengo and Wilcox Counties. The organization wanted to establish a program in Dallas County, &8220;but needed a representative that knows the people and knows the community,&8221; Cox said.

Cox is seeking senior adults &8220;who are willing to share their time, their experience, their ability and their skills for the betterment of our community and themselves.&8221;

RSVP volunteers serve at the Selma Assessment Center, the Selma-Dallas County Public Library, the Selma Area Food Bank, the Beloit Community Center and nutrition program at the Brown YMCA, Cox said.

Cox said the volunteers’ good deeds are honored at an award ceremony and luncheon twice a year. RSVP held its first luncheon in November at the Alagasco community room, where volunteers received gifts, a pat on the back and a sincere thank you.
